Saving money through food

About 10 years ago I had dug myself into a pit of debts and was terrified to open my mail. But about 6 years ago now I started a painful journey to clearing these debts.

It changed my life. I cleared my debts and had financial control of my money in ways most people can go their entire lives without ever having. This since has evolved into us as a family experimenting with every Pay check to see if we can save more by shopping this way or planning that way.

So we got caught up in a few episodes of eat well for less on you tube and were intrigued by the idea of eating better than we do and it costing less. Especially as it seems fruit or veg cost so much more than cheap chocolate and other snacks etc.

So I sat and thought about the food we cook and eat and tried to look into eat well for less ‘complex carbs’ theory and it was just that complicated!

But I got the basics and its a start.

We are planning our meals breakfast lunch and dinner and cooking it all from scratch. By planning our meals we are buying fresh potatoes instead of bags of frozen chips, waffles etc and instead of white pasta we are braving brown. Now apparently making all these changes make a big difference to the amount you need to eat and on day four of this month i am very pleasantly suprised.

I am no longer feeling the need to eat in the evenings. (This has been years of habit. Evenings, daughters in bed so we can sit infront of tv with biscuits, chocolate or ice cream etc) but I dont feel the inclination to eat and we are even struggling to complete dinners (unheard of by anyone in our home) and this week our budget was £38 for the three of us. This is more than half of our original food shop at nearly £80 including all toiletries cleaning supplies etc that 3 women need other than food.

Its been a very impressive start and i was suprised how easy it is to make a gorgeous Bolognese sauce with nothing more than Pasatta with garlic and basil leaves off my windowsill.

I encourage you to PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD (lol) change it rearrange what you eat and Plan your weekly meals after 5 years we have found it saves a lot.
